About Us

Washington Field Office SealThe Washington Field Office is the FBI’s second largest field office and is led by an assistant director in charge, five special agents in charge, and 12 assistant special agents in charge. We employ a total of approximately 800 special agents and 750 professional staff.

Our territory encompasses the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia, including Alexandria County, Arlington County, Fairfax (city and county), Falls Church, Fauquier County, Leesburg, Loudon County, Manassas, Prince Williams County, Quantico, Vienna, and Warrenton. Our area of responsibility encompasses over 2,629 square miles and an estimated population of more than 3.3 million people.

The Washington Field Office is organized into the following five branches:

  • Administrative Branch: The mission of the Administrative Branch is to provide human, technical, and capital asset resources to all entities in support of FBI priorities.
  • Counterintelligence Branch: Foreign counterintelligence is a key component of the FBI’s overall strategy, second only to counterterrorism. As the lead agency for foreign counterintelligence in the U.S. and the primary investigative component of the Department of Justice, the FBI has the responsibility to oversee the integration of the U.S. law enforcement and intelligence efforts to ensure that all available means are brought to bear to mitigate this ongoing threat, consistent with our nation’s laws and policies. The Counterintelligence Branch leads this effort within the Washington Field Office.
  • Counterterrorism Branch: The mission of the Counterterrorism Branch is to protect the U.S. against terrorist attack by sharing information with our law enforcement and public safety partners, responding rapidly to and investigating all possible terrorist activity within our territory, and conducting and receiving effective counterterrorism training.
  • Criminal Branch: The Criminal Branch coordinates, manages, and directs investigative programs focused on financial crime, violent crime, organized crime, public corruption, civil rights violations, and drug-related crime. It guides the investigative efforts against criminal enterprises and individual federal crimes within the Washington Field Office area of responsibility.
  • Intelligence Branch: The mission of the Intelligence Branch is to develop, collect, analyze, manage, and disseminate intelligence information for the safety, protection, and security of the U.S.; its citizens, allies, and interests abroad; and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This is accomplished through the Field Intelligence Group, which functions as our dedicated intelligence workforce and supports the FBI’s intelligence cycle through a sophisticated system of reporting.
