Former D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Officer Sentenced to 15 Months for Bank Fraud Conspiracy

Washington, D.C. - Natwan E. Logan, 41, a resident of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and a former Metropolitan Police Department officer, was sentenced on November 16, 2006, to serve 15 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler as a result of Logan’s guilty plea in August to bank fraud conspiracy, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Taylor announced today.

During the plea hearing in August and again at sentencing, Logan admitted to a scheme in which he and coconspirators deposited or attempted to deposit nearly $1,000,000 in counterfeit checks at banks in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Logan was employed by the Metropolitan Police Department as an officer for approximately six years until his resignation earlier this year. During the course of the conspiracy, which began in May 2004, Logan helped devise a scheme in which counterfeit checks would be negotiated by coconspirators at various banks. The amounts of the checks Logan and his coconspirators attempted to negotiate ranged in amounts from $1,985 to $500,000. In one transaction in March 2005, Logan traveled to Las Vegas to meet with coconspirators, where they attempted to negotiate a $500,000 check at a Bank of America branch.

In announcing the sentence received by Logan, U.S. Attorney Taylor praised the hard work of FBI Special Agents Thomas Chadwick, Robert Schwinger and Al Tenuta. U.S. Attorney Taylor also acknowledged the efforts of Legal Assistant Lisa Robinson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Weinsheimer, who prosecuted this matter.
