MPD Detective Found Guilty of Simple Assault of a Prisoner
Washington, D.C. - A 47-year-old detective with the Metropolitan Police Department, Jose Medina, was found guilty today of assaulting a prisoner in 2006, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey A. Taylor announced.
Following a bench trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia before the Honorable Patricia Wynn, Medina was found guilty of misdemeanor simple assault. He faces a maximum penalty of 180 days and/or a fine of $1,000, when sentenced on November 7, 2008.
Medina was indicted by a grand jury in January 2008. The indictment arose from the defendant's unlawful use of force against a handcuffed arrestee inside the Third District Detectives' Office on October 14, 2006.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann Carroll from the U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Columbia, with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Department's Force Investigation Team, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. Secret Service.
