Man Sentenced for Traveling to Engage in Sex with a Minor
(Alexandria, Va.) – Rosendo Manfredis Carranza, age 29, was sentenced today to 135 months in prison followed by five years of supervised release. Carranza pled guilty on December 16, 2008, to traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct. Dana J. Boente, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Joseph Persichini, Assistant Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Washington Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Anthony J. Trenga.
According to court documents, Carranza traveled from Prince William County, Virginia, to Maryland with a fifteen-year-old juvenile with the intent to engage in sexual activity with the minor. Carranza had been renting a room from the minor’s parents and secretly began an inappropriate sexual relationship with her when she was fourteen. In January 2006, Carranza fled with the minor, who had turned fifteen. Law enforcement searched for Carranza and the minor. Nine months later, Carranza was located in Maryland and arrested. The minor was reunited with her family.
After his arrest, Carranza was first extradited to Texas on an outstanding charge of sexual assault of a child, for which he later pled guilty and was sentenced to two years. After completing that sentence, Carranza was returned to Virginia to face the current charges.
This case was investigated by Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Patricia Giles prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
